What to see and do in Azara

Azara
Village
Azara is a small municipality of the Somontano de Barbastro, in Huesca, with 167 inhabitants (INE 2025), 40 kilometres from the city of Huesca, in the Alferche valley, next to the barranco de La Clamor and surrounded by sandstone outcrops among which the Peña de Santa Margarita stands out. Its name comes from the Arabic as-sajra, "the rock", referring to the one that presides over the town. On that rock the remains of its castle are preserved; it had Barbatuerta as its tenant after the Reconquest, around 1101-1104; the place belonged to the Order of the Hospital at least between 1566 and 1610, when the castle belonged to the Hospitallers of Barbastro. The parish church is dedicated to Santa Lucía, in whose honour the festivities are held from 13 to 16 December.
Church of Azara
Monument
Parish church of Azara, dedicated to Saint Lucy, patron saint in whose honour festivities are held from 13 to 16 December, along with other celebrations on Easter Monday and in June. On the nearby Santa Margarita crag remain the ruins of Azara castle, an old fortress that belonged to the Arabs and which in 1610 belonged to the Knights of Saint John of Barbastro.
