What to see and do in Broto

Broto
Village
Broto is a town in the comarca of Sobrarbe, in the province of Huesca, considered the gateway to the valle de Ordesa and located at the heart of the national park of the same name, through which the río Ara flows. It is the natural head of the Valle de Broto and traditional seat of the Conzello de Broto, an institution that acted as parliament and council for all the villages of the valley, first regulated in the 13th century and still functioning today, though with greatly reduced powers. The municipality, which includes the hamlets of Asín de Broto, Bergua, Buesa, Oto and Sarvisé, has 615 inhabitants, of whom 283 live in the village of Broto itself.
Church of Broto
Monument
Church of San Pedro, built in 1578 in late Gothic style transitioning to the Renaissance; notable for its massive crenellated defensive tower, typical of the fortified churches of the Aragonese Pyrenees of the period.
Festivities of Broto
Activity
Broto, in the Sobrarbe district of Huesca, celebrates San Blas on 3 February, San Clemente on 23 November and its patronal festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario from 4 to 6 October, with the traditional Palotiau dance as one of the most characteristic acts of the processions. The feast of San Blas, known as the winter festival, is marked by a joint pilgrimage of the people of Broto and neighbouring Sarvisé along the path linking the two villages to the saint's hermitage, while on 23 November the pilgrimage to the hermitage of San Clemente takes place. The local festive calendar is completed by other pilgrimages, such as that of Santa Elena on the second Sunday of June and that of the Virgen de Morillo on 1 May.
The fall and destruction of Broto
Historical milestone
Broto fell together with Torla in the advance on the Pyrenees and was one of the worst-hit places of the spring of 1938: the houses near the bridge were destroyed amid fires and aerial bombardment.
