What to see and do in Robres

Robres
Village
Robres is a municipality in the province of Huesca, in Los Monegros, with 524 inhabitants. Conquered in 1118 by Alfonso the Battler, it belonged to the lordship of Foces and, from 1646, to the county of Robres, a title granted by Philip IV. During the Peninsular War, the French army came close to capturing Francisco Espoz y Mina here. Next to its parish church, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and home to one of the comarca's traditional dances — in which the dancers enter striking sticks (paloteo) all the way to the altar —, the feasts of San Blas, on 3 February, and of the Assumption, on 15 August, are celebrated. Robres also preserves the Monegros recipes for farinosos, pumpkin empanadones and blood tortetas, along with products from the traditional pig slaughter.
Church of Robres
Monument
Parish church of Robres, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and home to one of the traditional dances of the comarca. During the dance, the dancers enter the church in full paloteo and stand facing the altar, except those portraying the Turks, who stand with their backs to it; afterwards the dance is also performed at the door of the hermitage.
Dance of Robres
Activity
The Danza de Robres, known as the 'Dance de los Embajadores', is performed on the last Sunday of May during the pilgrimage to the Virgen de Magallón, with a theatrical scene of Moors and Christians followed by the stick dance (paloteo) inside the church; Robres also preserves the oldest dated bagpipe in Aragon (1680-1730).

Food and drink
The traditional recipe book of Monegros preserves the farinosos, the pumpkin empanadones, the blood tortetas and the mallorcas, together with the products of the pig slaughter: longaniza, bolas and sweet and savoury rice blood sausages.
