What to see and do in Alberuela de Tubo

Alberuela de Tubo
Village
Alberuela de Tubo, in Los Monegros, has its town centre at the foot of a crescent-shaped sandstone hill, fortified in the time of Islamic rule; it preserves there a Muslim castle from the mid-9th century, with rectangular towers and underground chambers, and the rural Gothic hermitage of the Virgen del Castillo, from the 15th-16th centuries. The life of the village, of 270 inhabitants, revolves around the main square, with the church of San Juan Evangelista and the forge. Its economy, agricultural and livestock-based, diversified in the mid-20th century with the irrigation of the Flumen canal, which brought with it the founding within its boundaries of the colonisation village of Sodeto, built by the IRYDA, on land expropriated from the Duke of Villahermosa.
Church of Alberuela de Tubo
Monument
Church of San Juan Evangelista de Alberuela de Tubo, in the Los Monegros comarca (Huesca), raised on a late 13th-century Romanesque temple. In 1607 the chancel was remodelled, adding a transept and a five-sided polygonal apse, and the nave was completed with a gallery of window openings and two side chapels. The tower, attached on the Epistle side, dates from 1746 and houses the sacristy on its first level.
