What to see and do in Almunia de San Juan

Almunia de San Juan
Village
Almunia de San Juan is a municipality in the comarca of Cinca Medio, in the province of Huesca, situated between the Cinca and Sosa rivers; its name comes from the Hispanic Arabic almúnya, "orchard". It has 733 inhabitants and includes the settlement of Ariéstolas. In 1906 King Alfonso XIII inaugurated the Sosa siphon here, the largest masonry structure of the Aragón y Cataluña Canal, which transformed the comarca's dry farmland and gave rise to the irrigators' community of the right bank of the Sosa. The municipal area preserves traces of settlement since the Bronze Age and was under the domain of the Templars and the Knights Hospitaller before passing, in the 12th century, under the lordship of the Bishop of Lérida; numerous medieval cisterns, weirs and irrigation channels have also been catalogued along the Sosa River.
