What to see and do in Nueno

Nueno
Village
Nueno is a municipality in the Hoya de Huesca, in Aragon, on the slope of the sierra de Gratal beside the río Isuela, at the entrance to the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park, a reference point for canyoning, whose highest peak, Guara, reaches 2,078 metres. Besides Nueno itself, it includes Arascués, Sabayés, Santa Eulalia de la Peña, Belsué and Nocito, as well as the depopulated hamlets of Santa María de Belsué and Lúsera. Its name comes from the Latin nonus, 'ninth', from lying on a Roman road toward Osca marked out with numerical place names; under Muslim rule the wayside inn was replaced by a castle with a small church, from which a Romanesque capital, embedded in a wall, is still preserved. At the foot of the sierra, rosemary, thyme and wildflower honeys are produced for the region's fairs.
Natural Park of the Sierra and Canyons of Guara
Nature
The Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park extends across the comarcas of the Alto Gállego, the Hoya de Huesca, the Sobrarbe and the Somontano de Barbastro, in the province of Huesca, and covers fifteen municipalities, including Nueno. With 47,453 hectares and a peripheral protection zone of a further 33,286, it is the largest natural area in Aragon, with altitudes ranging from 430 metres beside the río Alcanadre to the 2,077 metres of the Guara peak. Its geology has shaped a network of canyons, ravines and gorges carved by water, making it one of the great references for canyoning in Europe; notable are the gorges of the río Balcés, more than 20 kilometres long, and the Grallera Alta de Guara sinkhole, with a 277-metre vertical drop. It was declared a natural park in 1990.
Church of Nueno
Monument
The parish church of Nueno, dedicated to San Martín, preserves an apse of Romanesque origin from the 12th century, while the naves and chapels are from the 18th century; its tower, with clearly Mudejar features, is one of the few of this style in the north of Aragon. The Diputación de Huesca has recently invested in structurally reinforcing the tower.
Honey from the Sierra de Guara
Food and drink
The hives of the holm oak and rosemary scrub at the foot of the sierra give honeys of rosemary, thyme and mixed flowers, pale and of strong aroma; they are sold at the fairs of the comarca and accompany curd cheese and aniseed sweets.
