What to see and do in Quicena

Quicena
Village
Quicena has within its territory the castle-abbey of Montearagón, a fortress and royal monastery that Sancho Ramírez had built around 1085 facing Muslim Huesca, in use until the disentailment of 1835 and declared a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation, now included under Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1931. In 1086 kings Sancho Ramírez and Peter I gave the town of Quicena to Montearagón, and in 1266 the monastery granted its residents a founding charter with privileges, today kept in the Archivo Histórico Nacional. The village also preserves a first-century BC Roman aqueduct that supplied Huesca, the remains of the hermitage of San Pedro Mártir, and a three-arch bridge over the río Flumen, built in the thirteenth century by the monastery itself. Its main festival is that of Santiago Apóstol, on 25 July.
Church of Quicena
Monument
The parish church of Quicena, dedicated to la Asunción de Nuestra Señora, is an 18th-century Baroque building with three naves, remodeled in 1854; around 1720 the master builder José Los Arcos undertook to continue and complete its construction. Its main altarpiece, a work by Gil Morlanes, is now kept in the Diocesan Museum of Huesca.
Castle-abbey of Montearagón
Monument
A fortress and royal monastery that Sancho Ramírez had built around 1085 on a hill facing Huesca in order to harass the Muslim city. It functioned until the disentailment of 1835 and today, in ruins, it preserves the keep and part of the enclosure. A Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) since 1931.
The founding of the castle-abbey of Montearagón
Historical milestone
Sancho Ramírez camped around 1085 on the hill that dominates the plain and ordered a fortress-abbey raised there to tighten the siege on Muslim Huesca; the church was begun the following year and housed royal burials.
