What to see and do in La Sotonera

La Sotonera
Village
La Sotonera, in the Hoya de Huesca comarca, was born in 1973 from the merger of Bolea, Esquedas, Lierta, Plasencia del Monte and Quinzano, later joined by Puibolea and Aniés, bringing the total to seven villages; its seat, Bolea, is the ancient Muslim Tolia conquered by Peter I. It takes its name from the río Sotón, which, together with its tributaries the Riel and the Venia, rises beneath the sierras of Gratal and Caballera. Beside the large reservoir that gives it its name, an important wintering area for waterfowl, the Bolea cherry fair is held every June, drawing visitors from outside to buy the fruit. It lives from cereals, olive and almond growing, and pig and sheep farming, as well as from the tourism attracted by the collegiate church of Bolea.
Reservoir of la Sotonera
Nature
The La Sotonera reservoir was formed by damming the río Sotón to supply the Canal de los Monegros, in the north of the Hoya de Huesca. It also receives waters from the río Astón, which flows into it, and from a diversion of the río Gállego from the Ardisa dam; together with the Mediano reservoir, on the Cinca, it is one of the two supply points for the irrigation of the Monegros, and it also has a small 5 MVA hydroelectric plant. The project began in 1915 with loose materials and abundant local labour, but the works dragged on, amid halts, until it came into service in 1961 and completed its filling in 1968. Now a habitat for waterfowl, turtles and bivalves, it has been recognised as an area of interest by the Sociedad Española de Ornitología since 1987.
The conquest of Bolea by Pedro I
Historical milestone
The fortress that the chronicler Al-Razi called Tolia fell into Aragonese hands after resisting the Christian push for years; Bolea was the head of its comarca until in 1973 it merged with five neighbouring villages into La Sotonera.
Bolea Cherry
Food and drink
The cherry trees of the flanks of the Sierra de Gratal give at the beginning of June a fleshy and sweet cherry that is celebrated with a fair on the Sunday closest to the day of San Antonio; it is sold fresh and in preserves.
