What to see and do in Alerre

Alerre
Village
Alerre is a municipality in the Hoya de Huesca, on the A-132 road, 4 kilometres northwest of the Huesca capital, on the left bank of the barranco de la Bala. It is documented from the beginning of 1104, in a concord between the bishop of Huesca and the abbot of Montearagón, and according to local tradition its inhabitants tricked Napoleonic troops by raising the French flag to make them believe the village had already been conquered, which is the origin of the residents' nickname, “the French”. It lives from agriculture and has 224 inhabitants. Its parish church preserves a main altarpiece and another of the Rosario, a feast celebrated on the first Sunday of October in commemoration of the Battle of Lepanto; also celebrated are 20 January, San Sebastián, and 25 July, Santiago.
