What to see and do in Tardienta

Tardienta
Village
Tardienta is a town (villa) in the comarca of Los Monegros, in the province of Huesca, situated in the Ebro depression at 389 metres above sea level, between the Sierra de Alcubierre and the plains of La Violada; it has 952 inhabitants. Settled in pre-Roman times by the Ilergetes, it was a hamlet dependent on Almudévar until Charles III granted it the title of villa in 1786, in gratitude for which its residents added the Bourbon fleur-de-lis to their coat of arms. During the Peninsular War, when it helped supply the siege of Zaragoza with ammunition and gunpowder, Goya painted two pictures devoted to its sierra. It became a railway junction on 16 August 1861, with the first train between Zaragoza, Huesca and Lérida, and its station still holds that role: it is today the smallest municipality in Spain with a high-speed rail stop.
Church of Tardienta
Monument
Church of Santiago el Mayor, in late Aragonese Gothic style with two naves and ribbed vaulting; the original building was destroyed in 1936, during the Civil War, and rebuilt in 1942. It preserves two large stained-glass windows depicting the Apostle Santiago and Santa Quiteria, patron saint of Tardienta.
Dance of Tardienta and La Almolda
Activity
In Tardienta the traditional dance is performed on 23 May, during the fiestas mayores in honor of Santa Quiteria (21-25 May), with the dancers' offering; this dance tradition is shared with other towns of the Monegros, such as La Almolda.
