What to see and do in Noreña

Noreña
Village
Noreña is the smallest concejo in Asturias: barely 5.3 square kilometres spread across five pieces, four of them enclaved within Siero, located in the centre of the region 15 kilometres from Oviedo. Its town sits on the hill of El Rebollín, while on the other piece, known as Ecce Homo, stands the chapel that gives its name to one of its festivals. Its 5,131 inhabitants, one of the highest population densities in the Principality, live largely off some eighty meat and charcuterie businesses that have made Noreña a land of callos, adobo, mollejas, fabada and sabadiegos, promoted by the Orden del Sabadiego. Every December it holds a large, well-attended Callos Festival.
Tower of el Reloj de Noreña
Monument
Raised in 1694, it is the emblem of the town and can be seen from almost any street. It presides over the smallest municipality in Asturias, 5.29 square kilometres, which was a county in the hands of the bishops of Oviedo from 1383.
Order of the Sabadiego
Curiosity
A brotherhood founded in 1988 to defend the sabadiego, an offal sausage that used to be eaten on Saturdays of abstinence. Each year it names knights and dames and upholds the pork-butchery fame of a town with dozens of meat businesses.
