What to see and do in Illano

Illano
Village
Illano is an Asturian municipality of barely 277 inhabitants, situated in the valley of the river Navia, which forms the axis of its terrain and separates the sierras on both banks, with heights such as A Bobia, the municipality's highest point at 1,162 metres. It is one of the municipalities where Eonavian or Galician-Asturian is spoken. Water here is an essential factor of production, dammed at the Doiras reservoir, built between 1929 and 1933, which provided work for a few years. In the Sierra de Carondio there are more than two dozen Neolithic burial mounds and the Entrerríos dolmen, the Llastra da Filadoira, and from the hillfort period remain El Castelón and Los Castelloes, at Hevia. The municipality preserves the traditional architecture of San Esteban de los Buitres and the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Pastor, from 1665.
Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Pastor
Monument
Built in 1665 in a municipality now home to fewer than three hundred people, it is the main religious building in Illano and a gathering point for the pilgrimage festivals of the Navia valley.
Mountain range of A Bobia
Nature
The Sierra de A Bobia rises on the boundary between the concejos of Castropol and Villanueva de Oscos, although its slopes also extend into those of Boal, Illano and Vegadeo; on its Illano side, where it forms the concejo's highest peak, it reaches 1,162 metres, while its highest point, the Filso da Bobia, reaches 1,201 metres. The sierra separates the basins of the Eo and Navia rivers, and several watercourses rise within it, including the Porcía river, the Suarón river and the Urubio river. In Illano, whose relief is shaped around the confined course of the Navia river, its passes command views of the river's meanders and the neighbouring mountains, such as those of the Sierra de Riodecoba and Sierra de Estela.
Yew tree of Pastur
Nature
A yew in the hamlet of Pastur declared a natural monument on 13 March 2003; it measured 17.5 metres in height and 20 metres across the crown before a storm split half the tree away in January 2009, after which it was consolidated.
