Slate of Carrio Curiosity · Villayón, Eo-Navia, Asturias Image of Villayón, not of the place itself. A slate slab engraved with an inscription still debated by scholars, found in Carrio in 1926 and attributed to the Visigothic period or the early days of the Asturian monarchy; it is one of the most enigmatic epigraphic pieces in Asturias. It was discovered by farmers when they dug it up in the village of Carrio, in the municipality of Villayón, and is today kept at the Real Academia de la Historia. Written in Visigothic script, it is not a diplomatic document like most of those preserved from the period, but a kind of spell or curse tablet: it invokes the archangels Michael, Gabriel and other patriarchs to drive hail clouds away from a village called Ciuscau, where the servant Auriolo lived together with its cemetery, his brothers and his neighbours.
