What to see and do in Villanueva de Oscos

Villanueva de Oscos
Village
Villanueva de Oscos, Vilanova d'Ozcos in eonaviego, a language still spoken here, is a concejo of barely 244 inhabitants in the Los Oscos comarca. Its relief, of slate and quartzite crests, exceeds 800 metres over more than half of the municipality, with the El Filso peak, at 1,197 metres, as its highest point; the rivers pour their waters into the Navia and Eo basins under an oceanic climate of fog and snowfall at altitude. The concejo forms part, together with other Asturian and Galician municipalities, of the Río Eo, Oscos y Tierras de Burón biosphere reserve. It arose around the monastery of Santa María, built in the 12th century through a donation from Alfonso VII of León and later Cistercian, and today lives off the Asturian cattle of the valleys and rural tourism.
Monastery of Santa María de Villanueva de Oscos
Monument
The monastery of Santa María, in Villanueva de Oscos, arose around 1136 from a donation by Alfonso VII to a group of hermits and was formally incorporated into the Cistercian order in 1203; the religious structure began to be built in 1182 under the direction of friar Martín de Vega, first for the Benedictines and later for the Cistercians. The building has been renovated several times since its foundation, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, but from the original Romanesque fabric the head of the church and the tomb of Juan Álvarez Osorio are preserved inside. It is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), and beside it the Living Way of the Cross is celebrated every year, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional (a festival designation of regional tourist interest).
Bread Ecomuseum of Santa Eufemia
Monument
Barely a kilometre from the municipal capital, it shows the complete cycle of artisan bread: growing the grain, the mill, the hórreos where it was stored, the vegetable garden, the kneading and the baking in a wood-fired oven.
