What to see and do in Pesoz

Pesoz
Village
Pesoz is one of the least populated concejos in Asturias, with barely 134 inhabitants; it occupies the valley of the río Agüeira, a tributary of the Navia, at the foot of the Cordales de Leares and San Isidro, in the territory where eonaviego or Galician-Asturian is spoken. Slate dominates its relief and has always provided material for roofs and boundary walls; chestnut, oak and birch trees cover its slopes, today partly replanted with eucalyptus and pine. Its microclimate, dry and sheltered from sea breezes, made it since ancient times one of the wine-growing concejos of Asturias. Livestock farming provides eight out of every ten jobs, and the village preserves the Ron palace and the Romanesque church of Santiago. The works on the Salime reservoir came to gather here more than two thousand people.
Argul
Monument
Argul is a village in the parish of Pesoz, in western Asturias, of medieval origin and declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection); its slate hamlet clusters on a hillside of the Navia valley and, together with the neighbouring settlement of A Paicega, forms one of the best-preserved rural ensembles in the area. In the mid-19th century it had 160 registered inhabitants, and Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico included a description of the place; since then the population has continued to shrink, down to the nine inhabitants registered in 2023.
Palace of Ron
Monument
The Palacio de Ron, also known as the Palacio de Monteserín, is a manor house built in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Ron family, who attained great power in western Asturias, at the centre of the municipality of Pesoz, the least populated in the area, with barely one hundred and fifty residents. It belonged to Álvaro Díaz, governor of Asturias under Ferdinand VII, and in 1909 its façade was renovated, arranged over two storeys with windows on the ground floor and balconies with wrought-iron parapets on the upper floor. It is organised in four wings around a courtyard with Tuscan columns; it has an exterior chapel with a bell gable and holds a 12th-century carving of the Virgin of the Tear. On its grounds also stands a medieval 12th-century square tower. It shares the spotlight with the church of Santiago de Pesoz.
