What to see and do in Santa Eulalia de Oscos

Santa Eulalia de Oscos
Village
Santa Eulalia de Oscos is an Asturian concejo of about 420 residents, in the Los Oscos comarca, within the Río Eo, Oscos y Tierras de Burón biosphere reserve, declared by Unesco in 2007. It is one of the municipalities where eonaviego or Galician-Asturian is spoken. Its relief, of slate and mountains running north to south, reaches 948 metres at the Outeiro Grande peak, in the Ouroso sierra, and is crossed by the río Agüeira, into which the Murias flows, forming the spectacular Seimeira de Murias waterfall. Forest land covers 73 percent of the surface area, greatly reduced by fires and logging. Here the marquis of Sargadelos was born, whose birth house is today a museum, and the Mazonovo ethnographic complex preserves a water-powered forge.
Hammer forge of Mazonovo
Monument
A water-powered ironworks from the beginning of the 18th century, restored in 1993 and working once more, whose 114-kilo hammer is still driven by the force of the river; it is one of the last active water-powered forge hammers in Europe.
Birthplace of the Marquis of Sargadelos
Curiosity
In the hamlet of Ferreirela de Baxo, Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez, founder of the Sargadelos factories, was born on 17 October 1749; the manor house opened as a museum in 2001, and the title of marquess attributed to him was never actually processed. The house, remodelled in 1774 and donated by Ricardo Duque de Estrada y Tejada, count of Vega del Sella and a relative of the marquess, recreates on its upper floor the traditional settings of a dwelling from the area -courtyard, lareira, hall- and devotes the ground floor to the iron and ceramics industry that Ibáñez developed at Sargadelos, with pieces from the Reales Fábricas. The forge and the cellar, located in the farmyard, complete the complex.
Río Eo, Oscos y Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve
Nature
Biosphere reserve declared by Unesco on 19 September 2007, spanning 1,595.89 square kilometres across seven Asturian municipalities, including Castropol, Vegadeo, Taramundi, Villanueva de Oscos, Santa Eulalia de Oscos and San Martín de Oscos, and seven municipalities in the province of Lugo, such as Ribadeo, Trabada, A Pontenova, A Fonsagrada and Negueira de Muñiz. It comprises the entire basin of the river Eo, from its source at Fonteo to its mouth at the Ribadeo ria, the ria itself and part of the neighbouring basins of the Miño, Navia and Porcía, forming a unit of biodiversity, culture and heritage. When it was declared it had around 33,000 inhabitants, and since then almost all of its municipalities have been losing population.
Ethnographic ensemble of Mazonovo
Curiosity
A restored ironworks and water-powered forge hammer some five kilometres from the municipal capital, which explain the whole cycle of iron in the Oscos: from the ore and the charcoal to the hammer driven by the river's water.
