Hillfort of Coaña Nature · Coaña, Eo-Navia, Asturias A fortified settlement on the left bank of the ria of the Navia, inhabited from the 4th century BC well into the Roman period; already excavated in 1877 by José María Flórez, it preserves around eighty huts and a castro sauna. Also known as Castrillón or Castelón de Villacondide, it was the first castro studied in Asturias and has had a teaching room since 1993. After the Civil War it was excavated by Antonio García y Bellido and Juan Uría Ríu, whose work helped establish the Celtic paradigm associated with the peoples of the north of the peninsula, although finds such as circular rather than rectangular dwellings, or burials without funerary urns, suggest that the castro culture has no direct link to the Celts.
