What to see and do in O Porriño

O Porriño
Village
An industrial town of some 21,000 inhabitants known for its pink granite, Rosa Porriño, exported half the world over; its town hall, the work of Antonio Palacios between 1921 and 1924, and the fonte do Cristo of 1905 are its most recognisable buildings.
Town Hall of O Porriño
Monument
Regionalist town hall built between 1921 and 1924 by Antonio Palacios, born in the town, which mixes a crenellated tower, galleries and local granite carving in a building turned into an emblem of the municipality. A fire gutted it in 1976 and it was returned to its original appearance in 1983.
Quarries of pink Porriño granite
Curiosity
In the parish of Atios is concentrated one of the largest groupings of quarries in Europe, with a capacity of hundreds of thousands of tonnes a year of the so-called rosa Porriño, a granite of pink microcline that clads buildings on five continents; stonecutting is here both trade and industry and explains the strength of the stone sector across the whole comarca.
Gándaras of Budiño
Nature
A wetland of some 800 hectares stretching along the river Louro, a tributary of the Miño, divided between O Porriño, Tui and Salceda de Caselas, included in the Rede Natura 2000 as a special conservation area; it combines peat bogs, seasonal lagoons and one of Galicia's best riverside forests, with more than 150 species of vertebrates. It was formed by the sinking of the ground between the granite outcrops of Penedo Corucho and Faro de Budiño, covered in large quartz crystals, and the Galiñeiro mountain range. It is also a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection): in 1961 a Lower Palaeolithic settlement was found here with Acheulean quartz and quartzite tools, dated between 182,000 and 28,700 years old. At its foot lies an industrial estate linked to the quarrying of O Porriño's pink granite.
