What to see and do in Mos

Mos
Village
Mos is a concello in the Vigo district, in the province of Pontevedra, with around 15,000 inhabitants spread across ten parishes, crossed by the Camino Portugués and by the Roman road that linked Braga with Lugo and Astorga. Known as Molis in the mid-13th century, it held the title of town from the last third of the 16th century until the early 20th; its parishes were formerly divided between the lordships of the Marquis of Mos and the counts of Salvaterra and Maceda. The present town council, formed in 1833 with its ten parishes, moved its seat from Mos to Petelos in 1935. It preserves the pazo de Mos, built from 1543 for the house of Soutomaior and burned by the French in 1809, and next to the chapel do Santiaguiño a Roman milestone from the time of Trajan is kept.
Palace of Mos
Monument
Palace of the marquesses of Mos, the ancestral home of the powerful House of Soutomaior, begun in 1543 for María de Soutomaior and Alonso de Quirós, with a chapel inaugurated in 1721. It has three superimposed floors and an austerity of Herreran air uncommon in Galician pazo architecture, the architecture of the Galician manor house. It was damaged by the French troops in 1809 and suffered a fire in 1816; today the Camiño Portugués skirts it.
The castro of Torroso
Nature
The Torroso hillfort, also called the castro do Retiro, was discovered by chance in the spring of 1983 in the municipality of Mos and was excavated between 1984 and 1990. Its period of occupation was very brief, from the beginning to the end of the 7th century BC, with no later reoccupations confirmed, which makes it one of the oldest hillforts detected in Galicia: it already shows a settlement from the initial stage of the castro culture built with an architectural system based on stone, a finding that requires qualifying the theories holding that this culture underwent a gradual process of petrification. It thus pushes back by several generations the known starting point of fortified settlements.
The Prehistory Festival of Mos
Activity
A themed celebration devoted to prehistory, without equivalent in Galicia, with workshops of knapping, casting and pottery beside the sites of the concello, among them the pioneering castro of Torroso.
