What to see and do in Salceda de Caselas

Salceda de Caselas
Village
Salceda de Caselas is a concello in the Vigo district, in the province of Pontevedra, part of its metropolitan area, with a population of around 9,400 inhabitants spread across seven parishes. Its capital, A Esfarrapada, lies in the valley of the Caselas river, between the 440 metres of the Alto de San Cibrán and the 40 metres by the riverbank, and the municipality borders Tui, Porriño, Puenteareas and Salvatierra de Miño. The name of the concello comes from the monastery of Santa María de Saliceta, founded in the year 914 by Queen Aragonta González; until a reform in 1916 the municipality was simply called Salceda, and since then it has been known as Salceda de Caselas. Today it lives off granite and the automotive industry, and celebrates its renowned Festa dos Callos.
Pazo Grande da Picoña
Monument
A pazo founded in 1543, L-shaped with a tower, a porch of round arches and a seven-arched loggia; it preserves a jurisdictional pillar on the roof and the iron ring that conferred the old right of asylum.
The Gándaras of Budiño
Nature
A complex of peat bogs and alluvial terraces above the Louro valley, one of Galicia's most distinctive inland wetlands and a refuge for amphibians and waterbirds. It is spread across several municipalities in the area. Made up of a set of lagoons, ponds and streams designated a special area of conservation, it is one of the largest expanses of inland waters in Galicia and is listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) for its Acheulean archaeological sites. The wetland formed when the ground subsided along tectonic fractures, later filled in with sediment from the Miño river; to the east the Louro winds between the Penedo Corucho and the Faro de Budiño, covered in large quartz crystals, while to the west rises the sierra do Galiñeiro. In 1961 a Lower Palaeolithic site was discovered here, with layers dated to between 182,000 and 28,700 years old.
The founding of the monastery of Santa María de Saliceta
Historical milestone
Queen Aragonta González founded in 914, in Salceda de Caselas, a double monastery of monks and nuns, from which the concello took its name; it was the first focus of territorial organization in this stretch of the Louro valley.
The Tripe Festival of Salceda de Caselas
Activity
Tripe stewed with chickpeas and chorizo is the dish around which the most crowded celebration of the concello turns, heir to the pig-slaughter meals of the seven parishes of the municipality.
