Gándaras of Budiño Nature · O Porriño, Vigo, Pontevedra A wetland of some 800 hectares stretching along the river Louro, a tributary of the Miño, divided between O Porriño, Tui and Salceda de Caselas, included in the Rede Natura 2000 as a special conservation area; it combines peat bogs, seasonal lagoons and one of Galicia's best riverside forests, with more than 150 species of vertebrates. It was formed by the sinking of the ground between the granite outcrops of Penedo Corucho and Faro de Budiño, covered in large quartz crystals, and the Galiñeiro mountain range. It is also a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection): in 1961 a Lower Palaeolithic settlement was found here with Acheulean quartz and quartzite tools, dated between 182,000 and 28,700 years old. At its foot lies an industrial estate linked to the quarrying of O Porriño's pink granite. Photo: Juan Antonio Patiño Méndez from La Coruña (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in O Porriño
