What to see and do in Gondomar

Gondomar
Village
Gondomar is a municipality in Pontevedra, in Galicia, part of the Vigo metropolitan area, located in the Miñor valley, between the Galiñeiro mountain range and the Miñor river; it has around 15,000 inhabitants spread across ten parishes and gave its title to the Count of Gondomar, Diego Sarmiento de Acuña, ennobled in 1616. Its archaeological sites range from Palaeolithic quartzite tools at the Chan do Cereixo to dolmens, petroglyphs and hillforts such as that of Pedra Moura, as well as a Roman road that crossed Couso and Donas on the way to Vigo. From the Middle Ages it preserves Romanesque and Gothic churches such as Santa Eulalia de Donas, and from the Baroque period those of Morgadáns, Chaín and Mañufe. Across the municipality are scattered pazos, cruceiros and the Mañufe bridge, already rebuilt in 1140.
Petroglyphs of Auga da Laxe
Curiosity
A panel discovered in 1983 on the slope of Monte Galiñeiro, at Vincios: twenty-six weapons carved into the rock - daggers, a great sword, six hafted halberds and eight shields or idols - dated to the beginning of the Bronze Age.
Mountain range of o Galiñeiro
Nature
A granite mountain range running from north-west to south-east through the municipalities of Vigo, Gondomar, O Porriño, Mos and Tui, forming a natural border between Gondomar and Vigo, separating the Val Miñor from the Louro valley and closing off to the north a council that faces the ría of Baiona. It reaches its highest point, 711 metres, at Monte Galiñeiro, whose summit already lies within Gondomar; other notable heights in the range are Alba and Cepudo, in Vigo, and Aloia, in Tui, established as a natural park. It is scattered with burial mounds, petroglyphs and a fortified enclosure at the summit, and alternates granite boulders, scree and heathland with oak groves and chestnut groves. From the top the whole of the Ría de Vigo and the Val Miñor can be seen.
The bridge of Mañufe
Monument
The oldest bridge in the Val Miñor crosses the river Miñor at the spot called da Ponte, in the parish of Mañufe, one kilometre from the town of Gondomar. Probably Romanesque in origin, it bears an inscription with the year 1140 on one of its ashlars, although it is debated whether it occupies the site of an earlier Roman bridge. Nearby stands San Vicente de Mañufe, a 12th-century church remodelled in Baroque style, in a concello scattered with dolmens and petroglyphs, such as those of the Sierra del Galiñeiro. In the area around the spot da Ponte, an old skittles course and a group of traditional houses of ethnographic value have also been found, among them the Casa Soleiro, the Casa da Moucha and the Casa do Xulián.
