What to see and do in Mondariz Balneario

Mondariz Balneario
Village
Mondariz Balneario is Galicia's smallest municipality, with barely 2.3 km² and about 700 inhabitants, born around the spring of A Gándara, whose waters were already frequented by the nobility near Sobroso Castle; tradition places here, in the 13th-century chapel of San Pedro, the 1282 wedding between King Denis of Portugal and the infanta Sabela. In the early 20th century the entrepreneur Enrique Peinador restored the spring and created the spa that turned the place into a lodging centre for the bourgeoisie. Separated as an independent parish on 30 November 1924, Alfonso XIII granted it the title of Muy Hospitalaria the following year. The territory also preserves remains of the Coto de Cividade hillfort and of a Roman road over the río Tea.
Mondariz Spa Grand Hotel
Monument
Opened in 1898 to a design by Jenaro de la Fuente Domínguez and with room for five hundred guests, it was one of the most luxurious hotels in Spain; a fire gutted it in 1973 and its remains were later converted into flats.
Spring of Troncoso
Monument
A spring discovered around 1862 by the parish priest Domingo Blanco Lage and declared of public utility in 1873; in the early 20th century Antonio Palacios roofed it with a pavilion crowned by a great concrete dome, on the banks of the River Tea.
Spring of a Gándara
Monument
The spring on which Enrique Peinador Vela built the spa in 1873 was sheltered by a granite pavilion designed by Antonio Palacios; its waters were declared of public utility that same year along with those of Troncoso.
Hillfort of o Coto de Cividade
Nature
A hillfort settlement preserved in the smallest municipal district in Galicia, next to the remains of a Roman road that crossed the River Tea; proof that the valley was inhabited long before the thermal boom of the 19th century.
Galicia's smallest municipality
Curiosity
At barely 2.4 square kilometres and little more than seven hundred inhabitants, it is the smallest municipality in Galicia by area; it split from Mondariz on 30 November 1924 under the name Nosa Señora de Lourdes.
Castelao's Blind Men
Curiosity
In 1915 Castelao painted three large canvases titled Cegos for the spa's bathhouse; after the fire of 1973 they were donated to the Real Academia Galega and since 2011 they have been on deposit at the Museum of Pontevedra.
Chapel of San Pedro de Mondariz-Balneario
Monument
A small chapel in the smallest municipality in Galicia, around which local tradition places the marriage of king Dinís of Portugal to Isabel of Aragon; it is the oldest religious building in the municipal district.
Roman road over the Tea river
Curiosity
Remains of a Roman road preserved beside the channel of the Tea in the municipal district of Mondariz-Balneario, a municipality of barely 2.4 square kilometres which also brings together a castro on the Coto de Cividade.
Golf course of Mondariz-Balneario
Activity
A golf course laid out on the slopes surrounding the thermal complex of Mondariz-Balneario, above the floodplain of the Tea; it is part of the leisure facilities with which the spa expanded its offer beyond its medicinal waters. Designed by the architect Álvaro A. Ibarra, it opened on 1 January 2000 and has 18 holes and a par of 71 from its different tees, with courses of between about 4,700 and 5,800 metres depending on the chosen level of difficulty.
The creation of the municipality of Mondariz-Balneario
Historical milestone
The settlement that grew up around the medicinal springs was separated from Mondariz under the name of Nosa Señora de Lourdes; months later, in April 1925, Alfonso XIII granted it the title of Muy Hospitalaria.
Mineral-medicinal waters of Mondariz
Food and drink
Bicarbonate waters that rise at the Gándara and Troncoso springs and that gave rise to the spa and to the municipality itself; they have been drunk bottled since the end of the nineteenth century and are served at the spring.
