What to see and do in Dozón

Dozón
Village
Dozón is the smallest concello in the Deza district, in the province of Pontevedra, set on high ground at around 740 metres, among mountains such as the Pena de Francia and A Rocha, and watered by the Asneiro river, a tributary of the Deza. It preserves the Romanesque church of San Pedro de Vilanova, all that remains of the convent founded in 1154 by the noblewoman Guntroda Suárez. Its capital, O Castro, lies 90 kilometres from Pontevedra, and the municipality is divided into eight parishes. In the mid-19th century it had 1,845 inhabitants; today it has not reached a thousand.
Church of San Pedro de Vilanova de Dozón
Monument
The church of San Pedro de Vilanova de Dozón is what remains of the Benedictine nunnery founded in 1154 by Dona Guntrodo Suárez under the patronage of San Pedro, in Vilanova, on the banks of the Dozón river; an inscription on the apse confirms the date. It received the royal privilege of coto in 1173 and depended on the monastery of Santa María de Oseira until 1499, when, with Isabel de Ulloa as its last abbess, it was absorbed into San Paio de Antealtares. The church, later than the last third of the 12th century, has a single nave with a semicircular apse and a wooden roof resting on five pairs of corbels, with a pointed-arch doorway and archivolts over barely worked foliate capitals. It preserves the sobriety of the rural monastic churches of the upper Deza, of which it is the reference medieval monument.
Church of Santa María de Dozón
Monument
A parish church with Baroque features presiding over one of the municipality's eight parishes, on a plateau whose average altitude is above seven hundred and forty metres, between the Miño and Ulla basins.
Chapel of a Pena de Francia
Monument
A hermitage built at the highest point of the municipality, 914 metres above sea level, from where the upper Deza valley and much of the hills that separate the Miño and Ulla basins are in view.
Pena de Francia
Nature
The Pena de Francia, at 914 metres, is the highest summit of the municipality of Dozón, in whose surroundings the Asneiro river rises, also called the Dozón, the headwater of the Deza. Together with other nearby elevations it forms the watershed between the Miño and Ulla basins. Nearby stands a chapel dedicated to the Virxe da Pena de Francia, one of the municipality's ermitas.
Mount Cubelos
Nature
An 833-metre rise which, together with A Gándara, forms the watershed between the Miño and Ulla basins; its bare ridge of heather and gorse commands the plateau on which the whole municipality sits.
Founding of the monastery of San Pedro de Vilanova
Historical milestone
The monastery of San Pedro de Vilanova, in the parish of Dozón beside the river of the same name, was founded in 1154 by Guntrodo Suárez, widow of Paio Martínez, as a Benedictine convent of nuns dependent on Oseira; an inscription on the apse confirms the date. It received royal privileges from Ferdinand II, Alfonso X and Sancho IV, and in 1499 its community was merged into San Paio de Antealtares, causing the monastery to disappear. The Romanesque church still stands, with a single nave and semicircular apse, a wooden roof on corbels and pointed-arch doorways with plant-motif capitals, today serving as the parish church.
Galician Veal
Food and drink
Meat covered by a protected geographical indication and coming from native breeds raised in the high meadows of the concello, where cattle raising remains the basis of the local economy.
