What to see and do in O Irixo

O Irixo
Village
O Irixo is a concello of Ourense covering 121 square kilometres, situated at the foot of Mount do Paraño, in the Carballiño comarca, with more than a hundred hamlets spread across twelve parishes. Its land, with granite and schist soils, is crossed by the rivers Viñao, Pedriña and Lobagueira, which have formed the valleys of Cusanca and Loureiro, and it preserves woods of chestnut and oak alongside pine and eucalyptus plantations. It reached its peak population in 1927, with close to 6,800 residents; of the 6,787 it had in 1900, less than a quarter remain today, after a century of emigration to America and later to Europe that has made it one of the most aged concellos in Galicia. It currently has about 1,340 inhabitants.
Church of Santa Mariña da Cidá
Monument
The parish church of A Cidá, one of the twelve parishes among which the 108 hamlets of this municipality are shared out; the place name itself points to ancient settlement in an area dotted with hillforts.
Mount Paraño
Nature
Height of some 800 metres in the Serra do Testeiro that separates the lands of O Irixo from those of Terra de Montes and dominates a municipality furrowed by three rivers, the Viñao, the Pedriña and the Lobagueira. Through its saddle runs the historic pass between the basins of the Deza and the Arenteiro, and across its slopes are scattered the hamlets of one of the most aged concellos in Galicia.
Mountain range of o Testeiro
Nature
It closes the municipality along its western edge and separates it from the lands of Pontevedra; several of the streams that run down to the municipality's inland valleys and feed its three rivers rise on its slopes.
The gold earring of Grota
Curiosity
An eighteen-carat gold earring found in 1905 at the spot of Grota, between Cardedo and Menaz, in the parish of O Campo. Today it is kept in the Museum of Pontevedra, far from the concello that brought it to light.
The castro route of O Irixo
Activity
Footpath approved as PR-G 189, of some six kilometres in a straight line, which links Irixo de Arriba with Valdesoiro crossing the parish of A Cidá and several castro enclosures of the municipality, with a variant that climbs to the one known as Coto do Castro.
