Church of San Pedro de Vilanova de Dozón Monument · Dozón, Deza, Pontevedra The church of San Pedro de Vilanova de Dozón is what remains of the Benedictine nunnery founded in 1154 by Dona Guntrodo Suárez under the patronage of San Pedro, in Vilanova, on the banks of the Dozón river; an inscription on the apse confirms the date. It received the royal privilege of coto in 1173 and depended on the monastery of Santa María de Oseira until 1499, when, with Isabel de Ulloa as its last abbess, it was absorbed into San Paio de Antealtares. The church, later than the last third of the 12th century, has a single nave with a semicircular apse and a wooden roof resting on five pairs of corbels, with a pointed-arch doorway and archivolts over barely worked foliate capitals. It preserves the sobriety of the rural monastic churches of the upper Deza, of which it is the reference medieval monument. Photo: José Antonio Gil Martínez (CC BY 2.0) What to see and do in Dozón
