What to see and do in Rodeiro

Rodeiro
Village
Rodeiro is a livestock-farming concello of around 2,300 inhabitants situated on the high ground of the Galician central mountain ridge, facing east towards the Faro mountain range, with peaks over 1,000 metres, and west towards the Camba valley, already known by that name in the year 832. Its centre grew up in the shelter of an old medieval fortress, the Casa-Fortaleza de Camba, mentioned in a 14th-century will; in 1345 it was sold by Alonso Suárez de Deza, nicknamed Churruchao, and after being confiscated from this family it became the most important stronghold of the Compostela see in the district. Fernando de Camba, lord of the fortress of Seoane de Camba, took part in the capture of Granada in 1492. In the mid-19th century the municipality had 4,000 inhabitants, almost double its current population.
Mountain range of o Faro
Nature
A mountain range that closes the municipality to the east with summits above a thousand metres; it forms the divide between the provinces of Pontevedra and Lugo and is one of the broadest balconies in central Galicia.
Valley of Camba
Nature
A valley opening out in the west of the municipality, at an average altitude of between six and seven hundred metres, where the landscape alternates hay meadows, chestnut groves and stone hamlets at the foot of the range.
Arnego River
Nature
Its upper course runs through the west of the municipality between alder groves and old mills before narrowing on its way to the Ulla; the valley it opens up preserves one of the best-preserved riverside forest corridors of the upper Deza. It rises at 800 metres above sea level at the Peña de Francia, in the Sierra del Faro, from the union of several streams, and ends its course at Brocos, where it joins the Ulla in the Portodemouros reservoir. Already documented as Arnego in the year 853, its name is thought to have a pre-Roman origin and a hydronymic meaning, related to the idea of flowing.
Fortified House of Camba
Monument
Old fortified house of the land of Camba, in the parish of the same name, in the valley that opens the concello towards the west; already cited in the fourteenth century in the will of Andrés Sánchez de Gres, it came to be a stronghold of weight for the see of Compostela and, razed in the Middle Ages, it was remade between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with the appearance of a pazo beside its church.
Mount Faro
Nature
A peak of 1,187 metres in the sierra do Faro, which separates the provinces of Pontevedra and Lugo between the concellos of Rodeiro and Chantada, and the highest point in the province of Pontevedra. From its ridge, on clear days, lands from all four Galician provinces can be made out. The area is declared a special area of conservation for its heathland and peat-bog flora and its forests of oaks, alders and ash trees, a refuge for species such as the otter or several bats. Near the summit stands the sanctuary of the Virxe do Faro, the centre of two pilgrimages, on 15 August and, the main one, on 8 September, which draw the faithful from the whole comarca.
The Winter Way as it passes through Rodeiro
Activity
A stage of the Jacobean route that avoids the snowbound passes of O Cebreiro by entering Pontevedra from Chantada. It crosses the valley of Camba and the river Arnego before continuing towards Lalín and the Ulla.
Festival of a Fartura de Rodeiro
Activity
A gastronomic celebration on the fairground at which the producers of the concello sell and offer for tasting sausages, cheeses, bread and sweets made in artisan fashion in the hamlets of the valley of Camba.
The sale of the fortress of Camba
Historical milestone
In 1345 the fortified house of Camba passed by sale into the hands of Alonso Suárez de Deza and ended up being the chief bastion of the church of Compostela in these high lands at the foot of the Serra do Faro.
