What to see and do in Portas

Portas
Village
Portas is a rural municipality in the comarca of Caldas, in the province of Pontevedra, with about 2,750 inhabitants spread across four parishes —Briallos, Lantaño, Portas and Romay— between the comarca of Caldas and the ría of Arousa. Its relief is shaped by the valley of the Umia river to the north, with altitudes ranging from 214 metres at the boundary with Villanueva de Arosa down to 10 metres beside the river itself; the municipal capital, Currás, stands at 53 metres. It preserves the priory of San Cristovo de Briallos, rebuilt in the 18th century, and the memory of the Benedictine monastery of Lantaño, already documented in the year 960. Between 1925 and 1930 its mayor was Concepción Pérez Iglesias, the first woman to hold that office in Galicia, and since 2021 it has hosted the PortAmérica music festival at the Azucreira de Portas.
Church of San Cristovo de Briallos
Monument
A 15th-century church that presides over the parish by which the Camino Portugués enters the municipality from Coruto; very close by, the municipal pilgrims' hostel has been awarded the Q for tourist quality.
Chapel of San Bieito de Lantaño
Monument
San Bieito is a locality in the parish of Lantaño, in the concello of Portas, which had 46 inhabitants in 2022; its name is a hagiotoponym, from the presence there of a chapel under the invocation of San Benito de Nursia. The chapel, probably built by the owners of the homonymous pazo, five hundred metres away, is surrounded by an oak grove; pilgrims come there on 21 March and 11 July to ask for a cure for warts and skin ailments.

Nature
An oak wood that surrounds the chapel of San Bieito, in the parish of Lantaño, and serves as the festival ground twice a year; it is one of the best preserved festival carballeiras in the interior of the Salnés valley.
Monastery of Lantaño
Curiosity
A Benedictine monastery documented around the year 960, of which barely any written references and a few reused remains survive; its memory lives on in the Galician folk verses that sing of San Benito de Lantaño.
Monastery of San Pedro de Lantaño
Monument
An old Benedictine monastery that ended up depending on the monastery of Armenteira; it preserves the church and remains of the outbuildings in one of the four parishes into which the concello is divided.
