What to see and do in Meis

Meis
Village
Meis is a concello in the Salnés district, in the province of Pontevedra, with a population of around 4,700 inhabitants spread across seven parishes; it is the largest municipality in the district by area and borders Villanueva de Arosa, Portas, Barro, Pontevedra, Poyo, Meaño and Ribadumia. It lies at the foot of Mount Castrove, where the Cistercian monastery of Santa María da Armenteira stands, founded in the 12th century by the monk Ero and with a large rose window on its façade; nearby stands the Romanesque chapel of Mosteiro, with an inscription from 1150 and capitals decorated with acanthus leaves. On the Castrove itself, Neolithic dolmens and Bronze Age petroglyphs are preserved, such as those of the Outeiro do Cribo, with labyrinths, deer and horsemen. In August the Festa da Carne de Poldro is celebrated.
Monastery of Santa María de Armenteira
Monument
A Cistercian monastery in transitional Romanesque, or proto-Gothic, style, in the parish of Santa María de Armenteira, in Meis. Documented since 1149, when Diego Ovéquiz donated the place of Gondes to abbot Ero, it joined the Cistercian order in 1162; legend attributes its founding to Santo Ero. It received noble and royal donations during the Middle Ages, among them one from 1175 by King Ferdinand II of Galicia, and in the 15th century the papacy intervened on its behalf against pressure from the nobility. Its façade bears an inscription from March 1212, and the transept is covered by a crossed-rib dome unique in Galicia. Disentailed in 1836, it remained abandoned until the late 20th century, when it took in Cistercian nuns. It has been a monumento histórico-artístico (Spanish heritage-protection category that preceded the Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1931.

Trail of a Pedra e da Auga
Activity
A waymarked path, PR-G 170, that follows the River Armenteira upstream between Ribadumia and Meis for some seven kilometres, passing dozens of mills and pools before reaching the Cistercian monastery of Armenteira.
Church of San Martiño de Meis
Monument
A twelfth-century parish church in the valley of Meis, one of the Romanesque churches of the concello together with San Salvador and the surviving apse of Paradela; Santo Tomé de Nogueira holds sixteenth-century frescoes.
Petroglyph of Outeiro de Cribo
Curiosity
A rock carving on the monte Castrove, in Meis, with a labyrinth-shaped motif uncommon in Galician rock art, normally dominated by cup marks and circular combinations.
Holy Week of Paradela
Activity
The Holy Week of Paradela is an annual Catholic celebration of the parish of Paradela, in the municipality of Meis, declared of Galician tourist interest. Throughout the week, residents of the municipality act out, with the active support of the attending public, the different moments of the Passion of Christ, from the entry into Jerusalem to the Resurrection; the Crucifixion is staged after a Way of the Cross that climbs to Monte da Croa. Processions and re-enactments fill the corredoiras of this inland Salnés valley all week long.
Festival of a Carne de Poldro
Activity
A tasting held in Meis every 15 August since 2006 around foal meat, coinciding with the annual horse fair set up in the concello on the same day.
