What to see and do in Ribadumia

Ribadumia
Village
Ribadumia is a concello of around 5,200 inhabitants at the heart of the Salnés district, in the valley of the Umia river, which gives it its name; it borders Vilanova de Arousa, Cambados, Meaño and Meis, and its oceanic climate, with an average temperature of 15 degrees, is among the mildest in Galicia. It is dotted with vineyards and pazos, such as that of Barrantes, from the 15th and 16th centuries, or the Quinteiro da Cruz, from the 18th, with English-style gardens. It celebrates the Barrantes red wine festival in the carballeira de Barrantes, on the first weekend of June, to honour the red wine made with the espadeira grape variety native to the Salnés, with a tasting committee, a meal of octopus and empanada, and a craft exhibition.
Palace of Barrantes
Monument
A pazo built between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th in the parish of Barrantes, in the very heart of the albariño vineyards of the Umia valley; it preserves a chapel, an hórreo and a working winery.
Palace of a Pedreira
Monument
A fortified house built in the second half of the 15th century, one of the oldest manorial buildings in the municipality, standing among the trellised vines that characterise the farming landscape of the Salnés.
Festival of o viño tinto do Salnés
Activity
Held since 1972, it champions the red wines from native varieties that were grown in the comarca before albariño took over almost the whole vineyard; it brings local growers together around tastings and communal meals.
Church of San Xoán de Leiro
Monument
The parish church of Leiro, which preserves a horseshoe arch of the pre-Romanesque period, reused in the eighteenth-century remodelling; it is the oldest element in the religious heritage of Ribadumia.
The separation of Ribadumia from the municipality of Cambados
Historical milestone
The six inland parishes separated from the municipal district of Cambados to form a municipality of their own, with its capital at Ribadumia, in the middle of the readjustment of the municipal map undertaken by the liberal regime.
Festival of o Pan do Salnés
Activity
A festival held in Ribadumia every August since 2002 around the bread of the comarca, baked in a wood-fired oven; it brings together the bakers of O Salnés and is accompanied by the wines of the wineries of the valley of the Umia.
