What to see and do in Cuntis

Cuntis
Village
Cuntis is a spa town in the comarca of Caldas, in Pontevedra, situated 27 kilometres north of the provincial capital, in the valley of the Umia river; its thermal waters, which spring from sulphurous sources reaching 64 degrees and which the Romans knew as Aquae Calidae, draw numerous visitors to its spa every year. The municipality, formerly known as Baños de Cuntis, had a population of 4,597 in the mid-19th century, a figure similar to today's 4,469. Its territory also holds the archaeological park of Castrolandín, still being excavated by the University of Santiago, as well as the bridge of Taboada and a notable set of petroglyphs and mámoas.
Termas de Cuntis Spa
Monument
Since Roman times it has drawn on sulphurous, fluoridated and lithium-bearing springs that emerge at between seventeen and sixty-four degrees; under the name Hotel Balneario La Virgen it has run without a break, even during the Civil War.
Hillfort of Castrolandín
Nature
An Iron Age fortified settlement excavated and consolidated by the Fundación Terra Termarum, turned into an open-air museum where in summer the archaeological work can be watched and the circular dwellings walked through.
Taboada Bridge
Monument
A two-arched bridge over the River Umia which preserves original Roman fabric, one of the few in the province where the ancient masonry can be clearly made out beneath the later alterations.
Mount Xesteiras
Nature
A 716-metre summit in the municipality of Cuntis, on the boundary with La Estrada and Valga, crossed by the PR-G 136 route of As Canteiras da Pedra Mona, which passes through Magán, Requián and Vilariño. At its top stand the Alto de las Tres Laguiñas, the Curro de Xesteiras in Couselo, the Pedra da Aguia, the Xesteiras quarries and the Piedra de los Soldados; the mountain also holds a Meteogalicia weather radar, crowned by a large sphere visible from afar. From the summit one can see the Rías Bajas, the Santiago de Compostela area and the neighbouring comarcas. In its pastures roams free the herd of horses that is rounded up every summer in the curro where the rapa is held.
Lagoons of Zo
Nature
Small mountain lagoons high up in the municipality, among scrub and granite outcrops, from which views open over the spa valley and the hills that close it to the east.
Pool of the Penedo
Nature
A natural pool on the River Umia flanked by old flour mills, one of the best-known river bathing spots in the municipality and a waypoint on the routes that follow the channel among alders and oaks.
Thermal springs of Cuntis
Curiosity
The sulphurous springs rise at several points in the town centre, among them the one called Fogo de Deus, open to the public, Os Forniños and the Burga do Castro; they have long been recommended against rheumatism and gout.
Rapa das bestas of Monte Xesteiras
Activity
On the second weekend of August the local people climb Monte Xesteiras to gather in the curro the horses that live free and cut their manes by hand, without ropes. It is one of the livestock and festive events of the summer in the concello and one of the best-attended rapas in southern Galicia.
Hyperthermal waters of Cuntis
Nature
Sulphurous-sodium springs that rise at temperatures of up to 64 degrees, among the hottest in Galicia. They have been used since Roman times and are recommended for rheumatism, gout and psoriasis.
Galician Lacón (cured pork shoulder)
Food and drink
A salted and cured pork shoulder covered by a protected geographical indication, which in these parishes is boiled with turnip tops and cachelos as the central dish of the winter meals and of the entroido.
