Granite ball of A Bola Curiosity · A Bola, Terra de Celanova, Ourense Image of A Bola, not of the place itself. The concello of A Bola, in the Terra de Celanova comarca, in the province of Orense, owes its name to a granite ball located at the site that gives the municipality its name, shaped by perpendicular fractures that left blocks in balance and which also gave rise to the municipal coat of arms. The municipal area, covering 39.9 square kilometres, lies on the eastern foothills of the sierra del Leboreiro, between 300 and 600 metres average altitude, with Monte de San Ciprián as its highest point, at 914 metres. It is a case of toponymy born directly from the landscape, similar to that of other Galician places where a striking natural feature ended up giving its name to an entire municipality.
