What to see and do in Xermade

Xermade
Village
Xermade is a municipality of around 1,700 inhabitants in Lugo province, situated between the Serra da Carba and the Serra da Loba, with the Eume river marking its northern boundary, where the Férvedes pendant was found, about 17,000 years old and considered the oldest artistic work in Galicia. Its name may come from the Latin villa Germinati, referring to an ancient owner named Germinatus, although an origin in the Hebrew name Yirmeyah has also been proposed. The municipality comprises ten parishes and borders Muras, Monfero, Puentes de García Rodríguez, Villalba and Guitiriz.
Pena Grande de Férvedes
Monument
The pendant of the Pena Grande de Férvedes, found in the rock shelter of the same name in Xermade, is a Palaeolithic pendant of soft stone with an oval shape, a flat, slightly convex section and a straight incision that splits one of its faces in two; it measures 43 by 34 by 11 millimetres and weighs 24 grams. Given the characteristics of its lithic industry it belongs to the end of the Magdalenian culture, with an approximate age of 10,000 years, making it one of the oldest known artistic manifestations in Galicia. The site lies in a municipality that also preserves around 160 documented burial mounds and several castros.
Ice house of Lousada
Monument
A stone snow well built to store ice through the winter and have it available in the warm season, an uncommon structure in Galicia; it survives in the parish of Lousada, in the north of the municipality.
Havana-funded school of Roupar
Curiosity
A school building put up in 1921 with money sent by the emigrants from Xermade in Cuba, one of many that the Havana education societies paid for in rural Galicia to fight illiteracy.
Mountain range of a Carba
Nature
A ridge in the north-west of the municipality that reaches 876 metres and breaks the flatness of the Terra Chá; its heathland and peat bogs link up with the Xistral, and streams feeding the Eume basin rise on its flanks.
Tower of Roupar
Monument
Seigneurial tower of the parish of Roupar, the only bien de interés cultural declared in Xermade; it stands in the same parish where emigrants returned from Cuba raised their school.
