What to see and do in Muras

Muras
Village
Muras is one of the least populated municipalities in Lugo province, with 577 inhabitants spread across 164 square kilometres of the Xistral mountains, now covered with wind farms belonging to companies such as Iberdrola, Acciona, Ecyr and Norvento. It is organised into eight parishes, including that of Muras itself, under the patronage of San Pedro, whose church has a Baroque bell tower dated 1846. A good part of its income also comes from employment in neighbouring municipalities, with industry in Puentes de García Rodríguez and services in Villalba and Vivero. For more than thirty years, on the fourth Sunday of September, the Monte de A Gañidoira, at 700 metres above sea level, has hosted the Feira do Poldro e Gando do Monte, with horse races, crafts and livestock competitions.
Blanket bogs of the Xistral mountain range
Nature
The blanket bogs of the Xistral form a complex without parallel in south-western Europe and are a priority habitat under European directive 92/43; they cover much of a conservation area where wetlands make up 61% of the ground.
Tower of Silán
Monument
What remains of the fortified house that controlled the parish of Silán, in the north of the municipality of Muras; it survives beside the parish church, in a mountain landscape it now shares with some of the largest wind farms in Galicia.
Wind farms of Muras
Curiosity
With fewer than six hundred inhabitants, Muras concentrates dozens of wind turbines installed by Iberdrola, Acciona and Norvento and generates many times more electricity than it consumes, an extreme case of the wind power turn in the Lugo uplands.
Source of the Eume River
Nature
The Eume river is born at the confluence of the Lamoso and das Toxeiras streams, at 759 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Lomba Longa do Seixo Branco, in the Xistral mountains; its headwaters lie in the parish of A Balsa, in the municipality of Muras, although the actual source lies already in the neighbouring parish of Montouto, in Abadín. From there it runs for 80 kilometres through the lands of Lugo until, past As Pontes de García Rodríguez, it cuts into the deep valley known as the Eume canyon, partly flooded by the reservoir of the same name, before opening into a broad estuary that at low tide forms the island of As Croas. It finally flows into the ría de Ares, between Pontedeume and Cabanas, with an average flow of 19.1 m³/s.
