What to see and do in Guitiriz

Guitiriz
Village
Guitiriz is a town and municipality of around 5,200 inhabitants in the Terra Chá comarca (Lugo), situated at an equal distance from Galicia's main cities. Its mineral waters, already known to the Celts and Romans, gained fame with the arrival of the Suebi and are today used at the Guitiriz spa. The terrain, flat at the centre of the municipality, rises to the west towards the Serra da Cova da Serpe, a natural boundary with A Coruña province, and is watered by the Parga river. In the 14th century the Terra Chá comarca passed into the hands of Fernán Pérez de Andrade; of the medieval fortification of Parga castle only a tower remains. The village also maintains a deep-rooted musical tradition centred on its municipal band.
Bridge of Santo Alberte
Monument
A 14th-century Gothic bridge in granite ashlar over the River Parga, beside a chapel hidden in an oak grove; the Camino del Norte to Santiago passes over it, and beneath the shrine's altar rises a spring held to be miraculous.
Spa of Guitiriz
Monument
An Art Nouveau mansion built by Víctor Bancaño and ready in 1908 to exploit the waters of San Xoán de Lagostelle, declared mineral-medicinal in 1902; it served as a hospital during the Civil War and today works once more as a spa hotel.
Spring of San Xoán de Lagostelle
Nature
A spring of sodium bicarbonate and sulphurous water that rises at about fifteen degrees and gave birth to spa life in Guitiriz; together with the Valdovín and Santo Domingo springs it forms the trio of sources linked by the Ruta da Auga.
Trail of a Auga de Guitiriz
Activity
A waymarked path, PR-G 99, of some twenty kilometres that starts at the chapel of Santo Alberte and follows the Parga and Ladroíl rivers upstream to link the three mineral-medicinal springs that made the municipality famous.
Vilariño, birthplace hamlet of Xosé María Díaz Castro
Curiosity
In this hamlet of the parish of Os Vilares the poet Xosé María Díaz Castro, author of Nimbos (1961), was born on 19 February 1914; the Real Academia Galega devoted the Día das Letras Galegas of 2014 to him, on the centenary of his birth.
Castle of a Pobra de Parga
Monument
Fortress declared a bien de interés cultural in the lands of Parga, historic domain of a lineage that gave its name to half a dozen of the eighteen parishes of the present concello of Guitiriz.
Parga River
Nature
The Parga river is born at the confluence of several streams near Nodar, in Friol, and soon enters the municipality of Guitiriz, where it crosses the town of Parga, which gives it its name, as well as several of its parishes. Along its 32-kilometre course it receives the Boedo river and, already in Begonte, the Roca river before joining the Ladra, whose waters end up in the Miño. As it passes through Baamonde it forms a river beach beside a mill and a weir that serves as a natural pool for bathers. Over its course, in Guitiriz, stands the medieval bridge of Santo Alberte, next to the chapel of the same name.
Xiboi Rock
Curiosity
Site of the municipal district of Guitiriz with human occupation dated between 8000 and 5000 before our era, one of the oldest Mesolithic testimonies documented in the Terra Chá.
Pardiñas Festival
Activity
Gathering of music and craft held each summer in the field of Pardiñas, in Guitiriz; it is one of the veteran events of Galician folk music and brings together luthiers and pipers from all over the country.
Trasparga is renamed Guitiriz
Historical milestone
The town council created in 1840 with the name of Trasparga adopted that of Guitiriz, the settlement that had grown around the station and the medicinal waters that made the place famous.
