What to see and do in As Somozas

As Somozas
Village
As Somozas is a mountainous municipality of about 1,040 inhabitants in the comarca of Ferrol, in the province of A Coruña, beneath the Pena dos Ladróns, 620 metres high, and crossed by the Mera and Grande de Xuvia rivers. Its name, according to the most common hypothesis, derives from the Latin Sub Montia, 'place situated at the foot of the mountain'. The municipality was born in 1836 under the name Santiago Seré de las Somozas, and in 1845 it incorporated the parish of Recemel, formerly belonging to Moeche; in the 1970s, Enchousas became famous for peasant struggles against the fueros. It combines livestock farming, timber and kiwi fruit with an industrial estate where wind turbines are manufactured and where much of the Prestige oil spill's fuel oil was treated. Its largest settlement, Igrexa, has around 500 inhabitants.

Nature
A ridge in the interior of Ferrolterra on which the Pena dos Ladróns rises, at 620 metres the highest point of the municipality; the River Mera rises in its heathland and downstream marks the municipal boundary with Ortigueira.
The Rock of the Thieves
