What to see and do in Aranga

Aranga
Village
Aranga is a rural municipality in the Betanzos comarca, in the province of A Coruña, with about 1,800 inhabitants across a district of 119.65 square kilometres, one of the few in the province where farming employs the majority of the working population. It stretches along the valley of the river Mandeo, between mountains that form the boundary with Lugo. It preserves a rich archaeological heritage: dolmenic burial mounds and petroglyphs near the hermitage of San Vitorio and at A Costa do Sal, and several castros, among them that of As Cotorras, larger than that of Elviña in A Coruña, and that of Muniferral. At Flores a gold castro-period torque was found, now in the National Archaeological Museum. The Romanesque church of Muniferral, from the 12th century, completes its heritage, along with two historic bridges over the river.
Church of San Cristovo de Muniferral
Monument
Twelfth-century Romanesque church in the parish of Muniferral, on the upper Mandeo, of a single nave and rectangular apse; it is the oldest in the concello and its clearest example of medieval architecture, in a territory where burial mounds and castros, the fortified hill settlements, predominate. Aranga also preserves the Baroque parish church of San Paio, of the seventeenth century, and a chapel that guards a brass cross of the tenth century.
Fraga das Barbudas
Nature
An Atlantic deciduous wood of some fifty hectares in the valley of the River Cambás, a tributary of the Mandeo, included in the Betanzos-Mandeo Special Area of Conservation; it is one of the best preserved groves in the Mariñas Coruñesas Biosphere Reserve.
Waterfall of o Rego da Palanca
Nature
A waterfall on the A Palanca stream, in the Cambás valley, one of the municipality's two great fervenzas along with that of the Pozo de Castro Rodicio; both punctuate a 6.4-kilometre path through riverside woodland.
Trail of o Val de Cambás
Activity
A 6.4-kilometre route along the bank of the River Cambás that links the Pozo de Castro Rodicio fall, the Rego da Palanca fall and the Fraga das Barbudas, within the Betanzos-Mandeo protected area.
The waterfalls of Fervencedo
Nature
The river das Fervenzas, also called the Bexo, cuts down here before flowing into the Mandeo and forms several falls of more than five metres. They run along a stretch of very dense riverside woodland in the interior of the concello.
