Church of San Nicolao de Cis Monument · Oza-Cesuras, Betanzos, A Coruña The church of San Nicolao de Cis, also known as San Salvador de Cis after its dedication, is the only standing part of the monastery founded around the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries, according to López Ferreiro, at the request of doña Paterna and with a charter of King Ordoño II and Queen Elvira documented in the year 911. In the 15th century it became a priory dependent on San Martiño Pinario, in Santiago de Compostela. Of the original Mozarabic-era church, only a marble capital and one corbel survive; the present church is Gothic, in the Romanesque ornamental tradition, and was built in the second half of the 14th century. Its west front opens with a doorway of three pointed archivolts, and it was declared a Monumento Nacional (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation, later replaced by Bien de Interés Cultural) in 1981.
