What to see and do in Acebo

Acebo
Village
Municipality of 567 inhabitants (2025) at 574 m altitude, in a valley surrounded by peaks such as the Jálama (1,492 m). It was repopulated after the 13th-century reconquest and administered by the Order of Alcántara. The 1588 census recorded 400 households; in 1753 the population was around 1,188 inhabitants. It preserves remains of an old Jewish quarter behind the church.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles
Monument
16th-century church built by the master builders Pedro de Ybarra (who later worked on Plasencia Cathedral) and Francisco Hernández. It blends Mudejar, Gothic and Renaissance styles, and its grandeur has earned it the popular name "the cathedral of Sierra de Gata".
Ermita del Cristo y el pequeño barrio judío de Acebo
Monument
In the Barrio del Cristo, north of the village, stands the Ermita del Cristo (16th century) with the image of the Crucified Christ; of Acebo's other hermitages, only that of La Barquera also survives. Near the parish church lies a small former Jewish quarter.
