What to see and do in Perales del Puerto

Perales del Puerto
Village
Municipality of 874 inhabitants (2025) at 440 m altitude, over the Roman settlement of Arcóbriga (an altar dedicated to Jupiter by the 'vicani Arcobrigenses' was found here). In the Middle Ages the Order of Alcántara controlled the mountain pass that has given the town its name since 1916 (before that it was called simply 'Perales'). It preserves 'La Cama del Moro', a medieval rock-cut tomb.
Orden de San Julián del Pereiro, origen de Perales del Puerto
Historical milestone
In 1156 the military Order of San Julián del Pereiro was founded in the area, which in 1218 became affiliated with the Order of Alcántara. In 1182 King Fernando II granted toll rights at the place known as Puerto de Perodiçola, the origin of the current place name.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Peña
Monument
17th-18th-century hermitage of granite construction, located at the meeting point of three municipalities, on the spot where, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to some shepherds. It was looted and burned by French troops around 1809, during the Peninsular War.
La Cama del Moro
Curiosity
Medieval anthropomorphic tomb carved into granite, 185 cm long and between 30 and 41 cm wide, oriented west to east, preserved within the municipal territory of Perales del Puerto.
