What to see and do in Agullent

Agullent
Village
Agullent is a municipality of the district of the Vall d'Albaida, in the province of Valencia, situated at the foot of the sierra that gives it its name. Philip II authorised its separation from Ontinyent in 1585 as a royal universitat with its own council and courts; the plague of 1600 led the town to entrust itself to Sant Vicent Ferrer, giving rise to the Nit de les Fogueres of 3 September, still celebrated every year. The district, rich in natural sites such as the Font Jordana, the Fornet de la Neu and the Font de la Maciana, preserves remains of the Neolithic and of the Iberian and Roman civilisations, among them a copper coin of the emperor Domitian. It was conquered in 1244 by James I, who incorporated it into the Kingdom of Valencia and granted it as a fief to the knight Guillermo del Olivar. It has 2,438 inhabitants today.
Moros y Cristianos de Agullent
Activity
Moors and Christians festivities of Agullent, which begin the first weekend after Easter and commemorate the Christian conquest of the territory in the time of James I. For four days the streets fill with comparsas and filaes reenacting the fight between the Moorish and Christian armies, with parades and festive events. Agullent also celebrates, from September 3 to 5, a separate festival in honor of Saint Vincent Ferrer, with bonfires, traditional dances and religious processions.
The separation of Agullent from Ontinyent
Historical milestone
With some 1,200 inhabitants and close to 300 houses, Agullent asked Felipe II to separate from Ontinyent. The Crown granted it in 1585 the status of royal universidad, with a council and justicias of its own, and the place went on to administer its own municipal district.
The vow to Sant Vicent Ferrer and the 1600 plague
Historical milestone
The plague of 1600 led Agullent to commend itself to Sant Vicent Ferrer. From that vow is born the Nit de les Fogueres of 3 September, a night-time pilgrimage festival repeated every year, and the cycle of festivities of early September around the saint.
Sweet potato pastries
Food and drink
Sweet turnovers filled with sweet potato roasted with sugar and cinnamon, fried or baked in the oven and dusted with icing sugar. They are the most common sweet of the festivities of Agullent and of Christmas throughout the Vall d'Albaida.
