Medieval wall of Alzira Monument · Alzira, La Ribera Alta, Valencia Image of Alzira, not of the place itself. A wide, well-preserved stretch of the wall that surrounded the urban centre of Alzira (La Ribera Alta, Valencia), the comarca's capital. The walled enclosure, of Islamic origin, was built between the 9th and 10th centuries to protect the ancient Al-Yazira or Algezira (“the island”), surrounded by the Júcar River, whose strategic crossing it controlled. Throughout its history it suffered attacks from El Cid and the Reconquest, as well as damage during the Morisco revolts and the war of the Germanías. The historic quarter it protected, known as la Vila, is today undergoing a constant process of restoration. Photo: Pablo Enzo (Public domain) What to see and do in Alzira
