What to see and do in Bétera

Bétera
Village
Bétera is a municipality in the comarca of El Camp de Túria, in the province of Valencia, situated on the southern slope of the Sierra Calderona 15 km from the capital; with 28,560 inhabitants (INE 2025) it is the most populous municipality in the comarca and the service hub of the Alto Carraixet sub-comarca. Its castle-palace of the Boïl family, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) right in the town centre, grew out of an 11th-century Muslim watchtower which, after the conquest, passed to the Order of Calatrava, granted along with the alquería of Bofilla to the commander of Alcañiz; that same order relocated the inhabitants of the depopulated village of Bofilla in 1358. The town keeps up the ofrena de les alfàbegues, in which the largest basil plants grown in the Hort de les Alfàbegues are offered.
Offering of the Alfàbegues of Bétera
Curiosity
A festive tradition of Bétera in which the largest basil plants (alfàbegues) are offered, carefully grown in the Hort de les Alfàbegues, one of the oldest surviving Mediterranean rituals. Declared Fiesta de Interés Turístico Autonómico (a regional festival of tourist interest designation) in 2007, it is linked to ancient Mediterranean fertility rites, and its cultivation in Bétera dates back to the 13th century. Growers sow the plants in late March and, come August, water them up to twenty times a day and remove the flower so they keep growing; in this way they achieve specimens up to 2.86 metres tall. The festival is held between 12 and 22 August and culminates on the 15th with the offering of the basil plants to the Virgin of the Assumption, carried in procession to the parish church of la Purísima by the so-called cosiers.
Festivities of Bétera
Activity
Bétera celebrates the Assumption of Mary from 12 to 22 August, with the traditional Ofrenda de las Alfàbegues on the 15th; the Divina Pastora on 7 and 8 September, with a processional descent from her hermitage; and the Santísimo Cristo de la Protección on the third Sunday of September.
Castle-Palace of the Boïl of Bétera
Monument
An enlargement of an 11th-century Muslim watchtower which after the conquest by James I passed to the Order of Calatrava and later to the Boïl family; it preserves four battlemented towers and is a Bien de Interés Cultural in the middle of the town of Bétera.
The relocation of Bofilla's population to Bétera
Historical milestone
The Order of Calatrava, lord of the municipality, moved in 1358 the inhabitants of the deserted village of Bofilla to the settlement of Bétera after the expulsion of the Mudejars and the mortality caused by the Black Death.
