What to see and do in Les Alqueries

Les Alqueries
Village
Les Alqueries is a municipality of La Plana Baixa, in Castellón, with 4,464 inhabitants in a flat landscape surrounded by orange groves, less than three kilometres from the sea. It originated in the Muslim alquerías of Bellaguarda, Bonastre and Bonretorn, incorporated after the conquest by James I into the municipal area of Vila-real; its Spanish name, Alquerías del Niño Perdido, comes from the Virgin of the Niño Perdido, an image left in 1683 by monks from Caudiel in the oratory of Bon Retorn. After several failed attempts since 1929 and a favourable ruling by the Supreme Court in 1984, Les Alqueries separated from Vila-real in 1985, taking with it close to thirty per cent of that municipal area. Modernista houses are abundant, such as the Casa Safont, seat of the town hall, and the Torre la Mina hotel.
