What to see and do in Betxí

Betxí
Village
Betxí, officially Bechí, is a municipality in the comarca of La Plana Baixa, in the province of Castellón, situated at the foot of the Sierra de Espadán and watered by the river Anna, or Seco, which rises at Alcudia de Veo and flows into the sea at Burriana. Settlement in the area dates back to the Bronze Age, with the old sites of Conena and els Castellets, and to Iberian culture, which produced finds such as the inscribed lead sheet of Solaig and the bronze of San Antonio, the only bronze text preserved in the Valencian Community. In the Muslim period the present-day centre took shape, made up of small alquerías around a fortress, from which comes the Arabic name of the place, Bayī. At 102 metres above sea level, in 1611 Felip Ruiz de Lihori, Marquess of Guadalest, granted a settlement charter to repopulate it.
Festivities of Betxí
Activity
Betxí celebrates San Antonio Abad from 13 to 22 January, with a procession of animals, a bonfire and a pilgrimage to the hermitage, and the Cristo de la Piedad on the third Sunday of September; in mid-August it also holds the quintos' week.
Castle-palace of Betxí
Monument
The castle-palace of Betxí, in the centre of the town, is one of the main heritage elements of the municipality, in the comarca of La Plana Baixa. It has Roman origins and is counted among the buildings of singular importance of the Valencian civil Renaissance, with Mannerist elements in the courtyard and the main doorway, together with Gothic features at the entrance. After years of neglect and urban-development damage, the ensemble still preserves part of the courtyard and the doorway.
Hermitage of el Calvario de Betxí
Monument
Hermitage of Betxí set in a natural environment, one of the traditional religious sites of the municipality. It stands to the northwest of the town, near Calle de Onda, within a landscaped precinct of 5,000 square metres that is the only preserved example of its kind in the whole of the Plana de Castellón. The first stone was blessed on 7 April 1755 and the works, after sixteen years, were completed in 1771. In Baroque and Rococo style, it has a centralised plan with a square space covered by a dome on an octagonal drum, from which four equal spaces branch off decorated with gilded rocaille. It belongs to the diocese of Segorbe-Castellón. On entering the precinct, one follows a path forming a Stations of the Cross with fourteen stops and ceramic altarpieces.
The resettlement charter of Betxí
Historical milestone
With the village emptied by the expulsion — it had one hundred and sixty Morisco houses against thirty-seven of Old Christians — the lords of the barony signed in 1611 articles of agreement with new colonists to bring the land back into cultivation.
