Castle of Miravet Monument · Cabanes, La Plana Alta, Castellón The castle of Miravet, on a hill beside the road from Cabanes to Oropesa, in the Desierto de las Palmas Natural Park, is an Islamic structure with alterations from the medieval Christian period. It is first mentioned in 1090, when it was conquered by El Cid; after the capture of Valencia, Peter I of Aragon occupied Miravet along with the castle of Sufera in order to collect taxes from the Muslim population. In 1225 Jaime I granted it, while it was still in Muslim hands, to the bishop of Tortosa, who around 1233 began the Christian resettlement of the district, which included the town of Cabanes, populated in 1243. Of irregular plan and with a defensive moat, it preserves the side walls, remains of towers and, in the lower enclosure, traces of dwellings and the ruined church of San Martín y San Bartolomé. conquista de El Cid en 1090, abandono a inicios del siglo XVI Photo: Josep Renalias Lohen11 (CC BY-SA 3.0) What to see and do in Cabanes
