Church of San Juan Bautista de Benafigos Monument · Benafigos, L'Alt Maestrat, Castellón The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Benafigos, in the province of Castellón, is a Gothic church begun in the 13th century, one of the oldest of this style in the province, and remodelled in the 18th; it was possibly built on the walls of the village's old castle, whose ramparts remain incorporated into several houses in the town, giving it a fortress-like external appearance. Its front façade, from the 17th century, was restored in 2003, and inside it retains well-preserved pointed arches and the chapel of the Virgen de la Ortisella, from the 20th century. The parish museum holds an altarpiece of Saint John the Baptist with panels of the Baptism of the Lord, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Onuphrius, and others depicting the flagellation of the Virgin, dated to the 15th century.
