What to see and do in Xaló

Xaló
Village
Xaló is a municipality in the comarca of La Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, situated in the Jalón valley or Pop valley, which together with Alcalalí and Llíber forms the sub-comarca of Aixa. It is crossed by the Jalón or Gorgos river, 55 kilometres long, and the Greenwich meridian runs through its urban centre. Surrounded by the Sierra de Bernia, 1128 metres high, and the Sierra del Ferrer, it has 3104 inhabitants and a mild climate, with soft winters and summers tempered by the proximity of the Mediterranean. With a winemaking tradition, the valley is covered in white between late February and early March with the blossoming of the almond trees, a time considered ideal for visiting it. Xaló gives its name to the whole valley, which it shares with the neighbouring municipality of Llíber.
Scalded muscat raisin
Food and drink
The moscatel grape is scalded in water with ash lye and laid out in the sun on cane racks until it turns into a raisin. When rain threatened it was gathered in under the riuraus. It was the great comarca export of the nineteenth century and is still made by hand.
