What to see and do in Senija

Senija
Village
Senija is the smallest municipality in the comarca of La Marina Alta, in the northeast of the province of Alicante, with 698 inhabitants, set at the foot of a small mountain, with undulating relief. Populated by moriscos until their expulsion in 1609, in the 17th century it belonged to the Zapata family, merchant knights, and around 1794 its 121 families lived from producing raisins and grapes for export. It retains references to a temple existing since 1280 in its hermitage of Santa Ana, and has turned the façades of the town centre into an open-air museum, the MOS, which tells the story of the village's life through paintings. Its patronal festivities, in honour of the Virgen de los Desamparados and Saint Catherine Martyr, are held on the first weekend of May.
