Village
La Vall de Gallinera is a municipality in La Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, famous for its cherry trees, situated in the valley of the same name that also gives its name to the river running through it, surrounded by the sierras of l'Almirall, l'Albureca and Foradada. Made up of eight settlements of Arab origin, among them Benirrama, Benissivà, la Carroja and Alpatró, its town hall is in Benialí and it has 585 inhabitants. In Benirrama stands the castle of the same name, from the early 11th century, and the church of Sant Cristòfol, the oldest in the valley, with altarpieces dating up to the 15th century. Benialí retains the route of the old Camí Reial, with the fountain of la Concepció and its washhouse, and was repopulated in 1611 by Majorcan families from Andratx, whose surnames, such as Alemany or Palmer, survive today among its residents.
